Terms of Use
The short version
- Shuye is for reading and studying Chinese. Most of it is free; Premium removes the daily limits on scans and explanations.
- Premium is a subscription billed by Apple or Google. It renews until you cancel it in your store settings, and refunds go through the store.
- “Unlimited” means normal personal use, with a fair-use ceiling against automated or abusive use.
- You’re responsible for having the right to scan or upload what you read, and for what you share.
- AI explanations and translations can be wrong. Don’t rely on them for anything important.
1.About these Terms
These Terms are an agreement between you and Shuye (“we”, “us”), the publisher of the Shuye app for iPhone, iPad and Android and of this website. By using Shuye you accept them. If you don’t, please don’t use the app.
Our Privacy Policy explains what data we collect and how we use it. It is part of how we provide Shuye but is not a contract term you agree to.
2.Who can use Shuye
Shuye is rated 9+ on the App Store. If you are under 13, you may use Shuye only with the permission of a parent or guardian. In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, a parent or guardian must agree to your use if you are under 16, or under the age of digital consent in your country if it is lower. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these Terms for you, and is responsible for any purchases.
You may not use Shuye if the law where you live forbids it, or if you are barred from receiving software or services from the United States or other countries whose services Shuye uses.
3.Your account
Shuye creates an anonymous account the first time you open it. You can later connect it to Sign in with Apple or Google, which lets you back up your data, use it on more than one device and buy Premium. Keep your Apple or Google account secure: whoever can sign in with it can reach your Shuye account.
An anonymous account lives only on the phone where it was created. If you lose or reset that phone, or delete the app, without having signed in, we can’t recover its data for you.
An account is for one person. Don’t share it, sell it or let others use it to get around limits.
4.The service and the free plan
Shuye turns photos, PDF pages and text you provide into reading lessons (with pinyin, translations and word meanings), offers AI explanations, reads text aloud with your device’s voices, and runs flashcards and study statistics.
The free plan includes, each day, 3 scans (a scan is one photo or PDF page, or up to 1,500 characters of pasted text) and 5 explanations (each with 3 follow-up questions), plus unlimited dictionary taps, Look up, flashcards and Listen. A page that can’t be read is not counted. Daily counts reset each day in your time zone. We may change what the free plan includes, and will update the app and this page when we do.
Some parts of Shuye need an internet connection, such as reading a new page or getting an explanation.
5.Shuye Premium
What it is
Shuye Premium is an auto-renewing subscription that removes the daily limits on scans and explanations, under the fair-use terms in section 6. It is offered monthly or yearly. There is no free trial: the free plan is how you try Shuye. Premium belongs to your Shuye account, so you need to sign in with Apple or Google before buying, and it then works on every device where you sign in to that account.
Billing and renewal
- You buy Premium through the App Store or Google Play, and the store charges your store account when you confirm the purchase.
- The subscription renews automatically for the same period at the then-current price unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your store account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- Prices are set in your store’s currency and can vary by country or region, and may include local taxes. The app shows the price you will pay before you buy. If we change the price, the store will tell you in advance as its rules require, and you can cancel before the new price applies.
Cancelling
Cancel in your store’s subscription settings: on iPhone or iPad, Settings → your name → Subscriptions; on Android, Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. The Me tab in Shuye has a Manage subscription link to these pages. After you cancel, Premium stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Deleting the app or your Shuye account does not cancel the subscription.
Refunds
Purchases are handled by Apple or Google, so refunds are too, under their policies; we can’t issue refunds ourselves. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com for the App Store, or through Google Play’s order history. Where the law gives you a right to withdraw from a purchase, you exercise it through the store.
Restoring a purchase
If you reinstall Shuye or get a new device, sign in to the same Shuye account and Premium returns on its own. If it doesn’t, use Restore purchases on the Premium screen or in Me → Shuye Premium.
Payment problems
If a renewal payment fails, Premium may continue for a short grace period while the store retries, then ends if the payment still can’t be taken.
6.Fair use
“Unlimited” scans and explanations mean unlimited for normal personal use: one person reading and studying. To keep Shuye fast and affordable for everyone, Premium has a daily ceiling, set far above what reading takes, to prevent automated or abusive use, such as scripted requests, bulk-processing whole books for others, or reselling access. The ceiling may change.
If you reach it, scans and explanations pause until the next day; everything else keeps working. If an account goes over it repeatedly, or appears to be used in these ways, we may contact you and may limit the account’s scans and explanations.
7.Your content
“Your content” means the photos, PDF pages and text you put into Shuye, the lessons made from them, your saved words and decks, and the questions you ask. You keep all rights you have in it.
You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to store, copy, process, translate and display your content, and to send it to our service providers (as the Privacy Policy describes), only as needed to provide Shuye to you and to the people you share with. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies others have already imported from links you shared.
You are responsible for having the right to scan or upload what you put into Shuye. Shuye is meant for personal study: reading a book you own, a handout from your class, a page you found. Copyright law differs between countries, and some uses of copyrighted text need the rights holder’s permission. Don’t use Shuye to copy works for distribution.
8.Sharing
Sharing a lesson creates a link that carries the lesson’s extracted text, its translations and notes (never its photos). Sharing a deck carries its words, readings, meanings and example sentences. Anyone with the link can see its title and add a copy to their own Shuye library.
Only share content you have the right to share. Text from a book, a newspaper or a paid course usually belongs to someone else. You can turn a link off at any time in Me → Sharing → Shared links, but copies already added by others stay with them. We may turn off links that infringe someone’s rights or break these Terms. If you believe a shared link infringes your rights, tell us and include the link.
9.AI explanations and translations
Translations, word meanings in context, notes, lesson titles and explanations are generated automatically, partly by AI models from OpenAI. Pinyin comes from software, and dictionary entries from CC-CEDICT. All of these can contain mistakes: a wrong reading, a sense that doesn’t fit, a translation that misses a nuance, or an explanation that sounds sure and is wrong.
Treat them as study aids. They are not professional translation, and not legal, medical, financial or other professional advice. Don’t rely on them where a mistake could matter, such as a contract, a prescription or an official document. We use the questions you type only to answer them; please don’t include personal information about yourself or others.
10.Acceptable use
When using Shuye, don’t:
- break the law or infringe anyone’s rights, including copyright and privacy;
- upload content that is illegal, sexually exploits children, promotes violence against people, or harasses anyone;
- use scripts, bots or automated tools to make requests, or try to get around the daily limits, the fair-use ceiling or rate limits;
- try to reach other people’s data, probe or attack our systems, or interfere with the service;
- copy, decompile or reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it despite this restriction;
- use explanations or other output to build a competing dictionary, dataset or AI model;
- resell or sublicense access to Shuye.
11.Our app and third-party material
Shuye, its design, name, seal and code belong to us. We give you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial study, under these Terms (and, for the App Store, Apple’s usage rules).
Shuye includes material from others under their own licences, credited in the app’s About screen: the CC-CEDICT dictionary (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0), stroke-order data from Make Me a Hanzi (Arphic Public License and GNU LGPL), an HSK 3.0 word list (MIT License) and fonts under the SIL Open Font License. Those licences govern that material.
12.Suspension and ending
You can stop using Shuye at any time and delete your account in Me → Account → Delete account.
We may suspend or close an account, or remove content, if it seriously or repeatedly breaks these Terms, if we must by law, or to protect other users or the service. Where it is reasonable, we’ll tell you first and give you a chance to explain or to save your data. If we close an account with an active Premium subscription without a good reason, we will help you get a refund for the unused period. Sections 7 (the part about copies others imported), 9, 14, 15 and 16 continue after an account ends.
13.Changes to Shuye
We keep improving Shuye, so features will change. We may add or remove features, or change limits. If we ever plan to stop offering Shuye, we will tell you in advance where we can, and give you a way to export your words and cards.
14.Disclaimers
We work hard to make Shuye reliable, but it is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we don’t promise that it will always be available, be free of errors, or that its output (readings, translations, explanations, schedules) will be accurate or suit your purpose. Keep your own copy of anything you can’t afford to lose.
Nothing in these Terms takes away rights you have as a consumer that can’t be excluded by contract, for example under the consumer law of the country where you live.
15.Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits, lost opportunities or lost data, or for losses caused by mistakes in translations or explanations. Our total liability to you for all claims about Shuye is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for Premium in the 12 months before the claim, or €50.
These limits don’t apply to liability that can’t be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
16.Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of Nepal, and disputes will be decided by the courts of Nepal. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country and may bring a claim in its courts.
Before starting a formal dispute, please write to us; most problems can be solved quickly.
17.If you got Shuye from Apple’s App Store
These Terms are the end user licence agreement (EULA) for Shuye. They include the following terms, which Apple requires. Where these Terms don’t address something that Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the “Standard EULA”) does, the Standard EULA applies too.
- Parties. These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content.
- Licence. Your licence to use the app is limited to Apple-branded products you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions, except that the app may be used by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
- Support. We alone are responsible for maintenance and support of the app. Apple has no obligation to provide them.
- Warranty. We are responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. If the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any, of the app to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the app, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty are our responsibility.
- Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the app or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- Intellectual property. If a third party claims that the app or your possession and use of it infringes that party’s intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging the claim.
- Legal compliance. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Developer contact. Questions, complaints and claims about the app go to us: see section 20.
- Third-party terms. You must comply with any applicable third-party terms when using the app, such as your mobile carrier’s or internet provider’s terms.
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. Once you accept them, Apple has the right, and is deemed to have accepted the right, to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
18.If you got Shuye from Google Play
Your use of Google Play, and purchases made through it, are also governed by Google Play’s Terms of Service. Google is not responsible for Shuye or for supporting it.
19.Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms, for example when we add features or when the law changes. We’ll change the “Last updated” date, and for significant changes we’ll tell you in the app at least 30 days before they apply, unless the change is needed sooner for legal or security reasons. If you keep using Shuye after the change applies, the new Terms apply to you. If you don’t accept them, you can delete your account and cancel any subscription.
